The first clause in the Bill of Rights, otherwise known as the Establishment Clause, states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion."

This clause was intended to grant citizens religious freedom and prevent the U.S. government from favoring one religious view over another, and from favoring religion over non-religion.
